The kanoun, also known as the qanun, is an instrument of the plucked zither family of Middle Eastern origin. Its name derives from the Greek "kanon", meaning rule or law, which reflects the regular arrangement of its strings. The kanoun is made up of a trapezoidal resonance box, nylon or gut strings, and small pegs to adjust the tension of the strings. It is widely used in Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Greek music, providing a rich and melodious sound.
